Stephen Brooksbank Memorial Event

31st May 2020
On this day, Tom shared some very sad news with us all.

Written by Tom Burns, President Age Concern Marbella-San Pedro

“This is one of the most difficult messages I have ever written and, as I write this message, I am overwhelmed with grief. After a very brief illness, my friend and mentor Stephen Brooksbank passed away peacefully in hospital this morning, on 31st May.

Stephen died, surrounded by members of his family and friends. Sadly, some of his closest relatives were unable to be with him due to the Pandemic. I was privileged to have known Stephen for a number of years and he was instrumental in setting up our Branch of Age Concern for Marbella and San Pedro. He taught us all so much about helping the elderly expats in our community. Many people reading this will have known Stephen well and, like me, will have witnessed the many kind things he did for so many less fortunate people in our community. I never knew him to refuse involvement in seeking solutions to problems, which, at times, seemed intractable. Most importantly, Stephen never sought recognition or thanks, his modesty was one of his most attractive features.

Stephen was a deeply religious man who led an exemplary life, he shared with me his simple belief in “Love Thy Neighbour”. He will be deeply missed by many and remembered with great love and affection.

I know you will join me in an expression of deep sadness and express sympathy to Stephen’s family.

When his daughter and family were able to travel to Spain, on 7 th July, we arranged a Memorial event at the Alabardero Beach Club on the paseo at San Pedro, which Stephen so loved. And together with giving thanks for his life, the occasion allowed his many friends to express their love and share memories of a remarkable man.

Here are some photos of the occasion.

Age Concern Inaugural Ball Friday 4th October 2019

The Ball took place at the Melia Don Pepe Hotel in Marbella. It was a strictly black tie event.

We were supported by several local companies, including the Hotel who donated a 2 night stay.

Supporters:

  • CLC World Resorts and Hotels
  • The Beach House
  • Helicopteros Sanitarios
  • Links Bar Aloha Pueblo

CLC World donated 2 week long holidays in at their resorts in Tenerife worth 1,500 euros each.

Many individuals donated both raffle prizes and auction items. Without their help, the event would not have been nearly so successful.

Several businesses booked corporate tables including Blevins Franks and St. James Place which included advertising in the programme and on the media screens throughout the evening.

The evening started with a welcome drink and canapés with music in the garden, followed by a 3 course dinner including wine, beer and soft drinks up to 11pm.

Entertainment was provided by the Masquerade Duo and the Marbella Big Band.
We had an outstanding auctioneer called Carmel Rogers who trained as an Art Auctioneer on the big cruise ships.

Carol Woolnoth made a keynote speech, before the auction, which we publish here.

We raised 28,500 euros on the night through a raffle, auction and proportion of the ticket cost. Thank you all!

Age Concern Charity Walk Up La Concha 15th May 2019

The walk was organised by Links Bar in Aloha Pueblo and led by Russell Soden.
Grateful thanks to Jason and Yvonne for arranging such a great event and their continuing support of Age Concern.

The walk raised a total of €3110!

Memorial lunch for John Wright September 20th 2018

We had planned a birthday lunch for one of our oldest members, John Wright, who was about to celebrate his 99th birthday. Sadly, John had a fall and died unexpectedly a few days before this special occasion.

We decided to continue with the lunch, as a celebration of John’s life instead.
The lunch was held at Links Bar in Aloha Pueblo organised by Yvonne and Jason in their usual friendly and cheerful style. He had no family but many of those who had known John shared stories of events in his life over lunch.

Carol Woolnoth, who had been visiting John for about 18 months, gave a tribute to him and shared her knowledge of John’s life.  Read a tribute here

Lark in the Park

Our first Fundraiser organised by the International Theatre Studio on behalf of the newly formed Age Concern Marbella-San Pedro. Carol Woolnoth acted as liaison between the two societies.

The event took place in the Parque Torre Leonera in Benahavis by kind permission of the Ayuntamiento. Great assistance was given from the Town Hall to ITS by Peter Letters.

Tom Burns opened the evening explaining our objectives as a new association to help elderly English speaking residents and asking people to help support us by buying raffle tickets.

Tremendous work was done selling raffle tickets in the interval and together with the money donated by ITS from ticket sales, a total of 4,100 eros was given to support our fledgling branch.

After the event, Tom Burns collected a cheque at the Town Hall. From left to right, Eileen Audas, ITS Treasurer, Tom Burns, President of Age Concern Marbella-San Pedro, Diana King, President of ITS and Peter Letters of Benahavis Ayuntamiento.
