We would like to make you aware of a number of scams that have been reported in Marbella, San Pedro, Estepona and across the Costa del Sol, particularly targeting elderly residents and expatriates.
These criminals rarely use force. Instead, they rely on deception, distraction, fear, or taking advantage of people’s kindness to gain access to homes or steal valuables.
Common Scams to Watch Out For
🔧 Fake Utility Inspector Scam
Fraudsters arrive without an appointment pretending to be from the electricity, gas or water company. They may wear high-visibility clothing and carry fake identification, claiming there is an urgent inspection or safety issue.
Once inside, one person distracts the homeowner while another searches bedrooms for cash, jewellery, bank cards and other valuables. They may also demand immediate payment for their “services.”
🏡 Fake Tradesperson or Home Repair Scam
Scammers knock on the door claiming they have noticed a loose roof tile, damaged guttering, a garden problem or another urgent repair that needs immediate attention.
While you are outside looking at the supposed problem, an accomplice may enter your home through the open door and steal valuables.
🚰 “Can I Have a Glass of Water?” / Lost Cat Scam
This has recently been reported in the Estepona, San Pedro and Marbella areas.
Typically, either two women or a man and a woman knock at the door asking for a glass of water. While the homeowner goes to the kitchen, one of them distracts the resident while the other searches the house for valuables.
Another variation involves someone claiming they have lost their cat and asking if they can come inside to look for it. This is simply another way of gaining access to your home.
Please remember that genuine callers will understand if you refuse entry.
🤝 The Hugging or Distraction Scam
A stranger approaches asking for directions, requesting help or pretending to collect for charity. They may hug or touch the victim as a gesture of thanks while secretly stealing a watch, necklace or wallet.
Sometimes they follow the victim to their front door and steal a handbag or wallet while the person is distracted unlocking the door.
💳 ATM and Bank Card Theft
Criminals watch people entering their PIN at cash machines or supermarket checkouts. They then distract the victim and steal the bank card, sometimes placing the empty wallet back in a pocket so the theft is not noticed immediately.
The stolen cards are then used quickly for cash withdrawals or purchases before they can be cancelled.
Consider activating email or text alerts for all card transactions so you can detect fraudulent use immediately.
How to Protect Yourself
• Never open your door to unexpected visitors.
• Utility companies do not send technicians without prior notice.
• Always verify any visitor by calling the company using an official telephone number—not one provided by the visitor.
• Never allow strangers into your home, regardless of the reason they give.
• Be cautious of anyone asking for water, to use your telephone, to borrow something, or requesting help looking for a lost pet.
• Keep your distance from strangers in public places. If someone invades your personal space, step back and firmly tell them to stay away.
• If you feel uncomfortable or suspicious, trust your instincts and close the door.
