It´s certainly a valid question and we hope that the answer can be found below. What plans do YOU have in place to ensure these are your best years? Because when we´re at work we take so much for granted.
Work friends and colleagues, structure, objectives and targets. A sense of purpose and so much more. When you leave work you also leave behind many of those things. You no longer share the same goals as your work friends and colleagues and the only objectives, targets and purpose are those you create for yourself
If you have hobbies and interests make sure there are plans in place to continue these as long as you have sufficient funds and remain in good health. You may well have a state/private pension and a savings pot but there won´t be an income from “work”
Should you have a partner you will now be spending more time together and that may be hard to cope with! Your partner will have his/her own life and will likely have to make adjustments coping with you being around.
Whether in a partnership or facing retirement on your own you will need to develop a new group of friends to replace the old ones from work. Research consistently shows that connection with others and a sense of purpose are key ingredients for a happy and healthy retirement. Many discover that fulfillment in retirement comes NOT from doing LESS, but from doing what TRULY MATTERS to you
So, how do you plan to achieve that? The great thing that retirement gives us all is the gift of TIME. Time to make new friends and colleagues with whom you can really relate are very important for your emotional and social well being. Finding and enjoying something that will give you a renewed sense of purpose is just a phone call or click of your laptop away.
