The UK Foreign Office and the Spanish Government recommend any UK national in possession of a green Residency Certificate, to exchange it for the biometric TIE card (that was introduced in July 2021) as soon as possible.
Many British nationals have reported that they have been denied access to services in Spain because they did not hold the most up-to-date document. With the introduction of the EU EES (Entry/Exit System) currently due in October 2024, there may also be problems at the border without a TIE.
Our good friends at Age in Spain have produced a very helpful guide for how to make this change.
You can see it here
If you choose not to make this change it is likely that you will start to encounter more problems with the old Green card as time goes on.
There have also been articles in the Euroweekly News (here) and Sur (here).
After reading these, if you still need help or have questions, please come into our Advice Centre at the Social and Activity Centre in San Pedro. It is held on a Monday between 11am and 1pm every week.
